I CAN Gymnastics & ACTIVITIES/Sports classes @ the ASIJELC

We started offering I CAN Gymnastics classes in the 1980s at the late ASIJ-NK (Meguro-ku, Aobadai) campus as a flagship of our school-sponsored, after school activities program for the nursery to the kindergarten students on a full-year enrollment basis.

Since then we are proud to have taught hundreds of 3 to 6 year olds who benefited from the I CAN philosophy as well as the instruction of basic gymnastics, motor-coordination, and sports-related skills. Due to the nature of our classes where the emphasis is placed on instilling confidence and nurturing a positive mental attitude in the pre-elementary school children we find it effective and vital that the students join for the entire school year.

By instructing the same group of children for an average of 30-weeks from September to June, we have witnessed significant success and we find that the improvement/progress of the children in achieving new physical skills in combination with developing a strong mental attitude in a disciplined and structured learning environment is quite phenomenal.

The consistency and continuance is the key element in creating a cohesive atmosphere among the students, together working to attain the most important goal of the I CAN classes – the belief in the “I CAN” combined with necessary action leads to success.

Our philosophy when applied properly not only aids the students in gaining physical strength and agility, but this attitude tends to permeate through to the students’ daily learning and routine within the school, at home, and outside – where the children are challenged to take on new tasks and to develop various social, educational, and physical skills.

The mantra that we chant at the beginning of every class sums up the true value of believing from a very young age in our capabilities and to continue our mental, physical, and spiritual growth.

What happens when you say that you cannot?

It makes things harder!

What happens when you say that you can and you believe it?

It makes things easier!

Is this only for GYMNASTICS?

NOooo, it is for EVERYTHING!!!”
